Positive Behaviour Support

At Woollybutt Specialist Services

Positive behaviour support - PBS - provides a framework to learn about a person and their needs, and to work with them and others to help build a good life. We provide support to NDIS participants with Improved Relationships funding in their plan.

Yes we can write a behaviour support plan

but....

PBS is much more than this.

Positive Behaviour Support is a process.

  • It’s a process of listening and learning how best to help the person reach their goals.

  • It involves working closely with the person and others (e.g., family, support staff, teachers) to make sure supports and strategies are implemented as intended.

  • We need to think flexibly about the needs of the person and their supporters.

  • We look for information to help make decisions about what to do and when.

  • We use evidence-informed practice, which means that decisions are based on evidence and not on beliefs and assumptions

PBS promotes a person's access to their human rights.

From all of this information we develop an assessment report that outlines why we think the behaviour is happening and what we think needs to change.

We prioritise the voice of the person so that they are meaningfully involved in the PBS process from the very beginning.

We then work with the person and their team to develop a behaviour support plan that meets their needs. This plan will include positive and proactive strategies and consider any changes needed to the person's environment.

The plan will also be provided in accessible formats for the person and their supports. This might be using easy english, visual supports and choosing what information is provided at what time.

Implementing and Reviewing the Plan

At Woollybutt we don't just provide a PBS plan....

We work with the person and their support team to make sure the plan is put into practice. This includes:

  • Training

  • Regular reviews with the person and the team

  • Checking that strategies are being implemented

  • Measuring outcomes

  • Making changes as needed.

PBS takes a person-centred approach, which gives voice to a person’s values, desires and preferences.
